Hanging out with my friend Sonja always means that I’m in for a new food experience. Wether it’s a recommendation we’ve gotten from someone, or a simple flip through Scoutmob, we always end up at a new spot, and generally have similar food interests. Our biggest interest? Brunch.
I love brunch. I love waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning after a tough week at work, and possibly a tough night of drinking with friends. I love having a big cup of hot coffee and a nice warm breakfast to start the day. Partial to eggs, I’ll usually get an omelette, but recently I’ve started going to classic bacon and eggs. This weekend we headed over to Lodge in Williamsburg, BK. Scoutmob had a deal that we couldn’t pass up.
The atmosphere was cute and rustic. Sonja was waiting for me in what looked to be the “den” next to a roaring fire. Fairly Williamsburg-esq, the place was filled with hipsters and I even spotted the Barista from my coffee spot in Tribeca having a solo brunch over a book.
There’s a few things that make a good brunch spot in my book.
1) Do they have soy milk?
- not everyone can really drink milk or deal with lactose in general. But that doesn’t mean we don’t like “cream” in our coffee. If you can provide me with soy milk, you likely have just won over a new, frequent, customer.
2) Do they give you delicious little breads or croissants?
- I love little breads. Not much more to say than that. Lodge did not have little breads. That’s one strike against them.
3) Do they have hot sauce?
- I have noticed that when I order hot sauce with eggs in New York, I get a very small personal sized hot sauce. Something you may use at the dinner table. However, in the midwest, if you ask for hot sauce for your eggs, they bring you an industrial sized Sam’s club hot sauce, because nobody in the midwest puts hot sauce on eggs. NOT ONLY did Lodge bring me hot sauce, they offered me a CHOICE of hot sauces.
So no breads, but a choice of hot sauces? Yeah, I’ll be back.
