A Kitchen in Queens

Recipes and Reviews from a little kitchen in a borough of nyc.
I can’t quite recall how the idea came up, but I was talking to my friend Bailey one day and we decided that we should spend one entire day watching all of Ryan Gosling’s movies.  We both had a day off coming up soon, and it seemed like this might be the best possible way for us to spend our day.  We started thinking about what movies to watch and then it hit me.  We should have a Ryan Gosling Film/Food Fest, where we watch movies and make food inspired by Ryan and/or his movies.
I immediately sent out an email to a few friends to see if they were interested. My apartment isn’t very large, so I only approached a few people, but ultimately they were into it, and the plan was set.  We decided to limit ourselves to 3 because we didn’t want to go on Gosling overload.  The films we ended up watching were:
Drive
Murder by Numbers (classic Gosling)
Ides of March
I made 4 dishes for the event inspired by Murder by Numbers.   I MAY have gone a little overboard seeing as how there were only going to be 4 or 5 of us and they were all supposed to bring food too.  When my friend Sonja got sick, and Emily wasn’t sure she’d make it, I told bailey to hold off on her dish, which was sad because it was great.
Hot dogs wrapped in bacon = Half Nelsons!
My friend emily did finally make it after having lunch with her mother and brought Rye and Gosling (ginger beer).  Rye an Gosling.  Ryan Gosling!  Genius!
So for murder by numbers, I thought outside the box a bit.  Thinking about murder and death, and the movie itself, this is what I came up with:
ArtiCHOKE dip
BLOOD orange chicken wings with a whipped minted feta
DEATH by Chocolate cookies
And another one that I’m saving for a 2nd post.  I use the term made loosely.  I actually bought the dip and the cookies, but I did make the wings and the other dish AND their dipping sauces.
The wings were a big hit.  Very tasty and very easy to make. I found the recipe here. Just kind of stumbled across it looking for dishes to make with blood oranges.

For the Wings
2 pounds chicken wings
kosher salt and black pepper
3/4 cups juice from 3 blood oranges
1.5 tablespoons honey
1/2 tablespoon blood orange zest
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Cut the chicken wings into thirds, and reserve the wing tips for stock. Pat dry thoroughly. Season with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper and arrange on the baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes, flipping the wings every 15 minutes.
Line a baking sheet with foil, then with parchment paper. After the wings have baked for 45 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and brush the wings all over with the glaze. Return to the oven to bake for 5 more minutes. Serve warm with Minted Whipped Feta (recipe follows). While the wings are baking, make the glaze. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, mix the blood orange juice, zest, honey, and crushed red pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 25 minutes, or until the glaze has reduced to about 1/4 of a cup. Remove from the heat and set aside.
For the Feta:
3/4 pounds fresh feta, rinsed and crumbled
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
black pepper
1/4 cup
chopped fresh mint
Put the crumbled feta, olive oil, lemon juice, and pepper in a food processor and process until smooth. It should look a bit like hummus. Add the chopped mint and pulse a few times to incorporate.
Serve in a pretty bowl topped with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprig of mint.

They were delicious! I would absolutely add more orange and more lemon next time.  I wish that the citrus taste had been a little more visible.  It was tasty, but not necessarily citrusy, which would have been a nice addition to both dishes.
And if you’re wondering what the last dish was, you’ll have to come back tomorrow to find out.
